Neco Padaratz (center) sets the unofficial Guinness record for world’s tiniest surfer at Snapper Rocks on Australia’s Gold Coast. Or maybe it’s the record for biggest surfboard.

The Amazing Falkirk Wheel

February 26, 2006 at 8:25 pm (Tech)

The Falkirk Wheel, a boat lift connecting two canals near Falkirk, Scotland is one hell of a tech dream!!

Thanks to Archimedes’ principle (floating objects displace their own weight), each water-filled caisson weighs the same amount. That allows the entire counter-balanced tip to bring boats—water and all—up or down to the next canal using just a 1.5 kilowatt-hours of energy—the same amount of energy it takes to boil eight kettles of water.

Bode Miller Strikes Out

February 25, 2006 at 5:37 pm (Sports)

After four tries at an Olympic Medal US skier and boozer Bode Miller failed to medal in any of his events. Not a huge suprise, but I bet Nike’s having a difficult time considering they banked ($10 million) that Bode would be their poster boy after winning a medal. Oh well, looks like it’s time for Bode to get crunk in the Italian Alps!!

Launched in the Japanese magazine Huge, the Nike Zvezdochka is out of this world. Literally. Designed by Marc Newson as a multi purpose shoe for cosmonauts, it’s named for the Russian space dog that ventured aboard Sputnik 10 in 1961. While it may look like a reinvention of the Jelly, it promises to be the next major accomplishment in footwear engineering. If you’re in London, you might be able to decide for yourself when Newson’s show opens next week at the Design Museum.

Which Version of Vista is For You?

February 24, 2006 at 4:39 pm (Gadgets, Tech)

With a new version of windows arriving within the next six

months it is time to deciede which one is for you. Not to
worry there is only one…oops…EIGHT versions to choose
from. Takes Bill for allowing us to again spend more money
on something we really dont need.

Windows Starter 2007 – Vista without Aero, probably meant for developing nations.

Windows Vista Home Basic – Basic Windows Vista for your single PC fam, doesn’t sound like much going on here. Analagous to XP Home.

Windows Vista Home Basic N – European version of the same, but without Media Player (because of antitrust rulings against MS in the EU).

Windows Vista Home Premium – This is the one we’re all probably gonna own. It’s got Media Center functionality, Cable Card support, the whole home-media shebang.

Windows Vista Business – Think of it as XP Pro, but Vista.

Windows Vista Business N – Think of it as XP Pro, but Vista, but Euro.

Windows Vista Enterprise – Business version of Vista with numerous enterprise features, like Virtual PC, volume encryption, etc.

Windows Vista Ultimate – Love that name. This one does all of the above (and more); what else do you need to know? It’s ultimate Windows..
